Listening for Water

On these low-temp Colorado freezing nites,
with minus figures at dinnertime,
and the wind chill taking us further
into arctic chill,
I wake in the night to my own inner alarm,
listening for water.
Listening for the continuous drip
from kitchen and bathroom faucets.
If I do not hear the water dropping itself
into sinks, I am on the run,
from one place to another,
to make sure ice hasn’t formed
in the pipes for they will break
and flood.
I listen for water through my sleep.
